5-ELEMENTS

5-Element diagnosis and treatment is based on the relationship of different aspects of ourselves to certain types of movement or energetics that Qi has in nature.  The 5 Elements or phases:  Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire, can be used to explain how we feel and behave physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Each of us is born with a certain constitution that, when strengthened, promotes good health and wellness.  Elements other than the constitutional Element may also become imbalanced. Acupuncture treatments, as well as herbal formulas, are designed to re-balance the relationships between each of these energetics.

One way of describing the energetics of the 5 Elements is by comparing them to the Seasons in nature, or the phases of growth and development.  The Wood element, which corresponds to springtime, represents explosive growth as one would see in a seed that germinates and rapidly sends down roots and shoots that become stems and leaves of a plant.  The Fire element represents further growth and maturing of vegetation as occurs during the height of summer.  Late summer, when hot humid weather predominates, depicts the Earth element, and harvesting of the fruits of our labors.  The Metal element corresponds to the downward movement and decay of leaves from the trees in autumn, when plants consolidate and ready themselves for the cold of winter.  Water is the element of winter, a time of quiet contemplation and dormancy before the warmth of spring occurs once again.

The Chinese have described correspondences to each phase or Element based on energetic movements that resonate with that Element – as a result of observation, they noticed certain colors, sounds, aromas, and emotions (these are just a few of the many types of correspondences they saw) seemed to correspond to a particular Element and to particular organ systems in the body. Wood (Liver & Gallbladder), Fire (Heart & Small Intestine), Earth (Spleen/Pancreas & Stomach), Metal (Lung & Colon), and Water (Kidneys & Bladder) can relate to physical illness or to a tendency to feel a particular emotion more than others when the Elements are out of balance.  Your constitution determines which imbalances are more likely to occur, however your state of health is very much affected by your lifestyle choices: how and what you eat, how much sleep and rest you get, how much you exercise (and type of exercise), allowing yourself to play and to love, among others.  Acupuncture and Chiinese herbal medicine, as well as Tai Chi, Chi Kung, and meditation can help you to return to and maintain your balance among the 5 Elements.
