 Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy entails the use of essential oils, which are concentrated fragrances derived from plants.  The positive effects of essential oils can be achieved in 2 main ways:  by breathing the aroma given off by the oils, or by applying them to the skin in diluted form.  Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years to improve health and to affect the psyche or emotional state.

Oils can be selected for their varying effects: some create a calming or relaxing effect, while others are stimulating, uplifting, or energizing.  Essential oils can be used either singly or in blends that combine several oils to create an overall effect.  When using essential oils topically, they should always be diluted before applying to the skin.  The therapeutic effect of the oils is generally felt within 15 minutes of application to the skin, and within seconds when inhaled.

Essential oils that are commonly used for therapeutic health treatments include:

  • Basil

  • Lavender

  • Rosemary

  • Clary sage

  • Sandalwood

  • Damask rose

  • Rose geranium

  • Lemon, orange, or grapefruit

  • Frankincense

  • Lemongrass

  • Marjoram

  • Vetiver

  • Neroli

Although aromatherapy is most often known for its esthetic uses, several traditions of medicine, including Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, have defined its use clinically.  Essential oils can be selected based on their physiological effects on certain parts of the body – for example, clary sage is known for its estrogenic effects, so that it is useful in relieving menstrual cramps and menopausal hot flashes.

Oils will be selected for your treatment based on the nature of the oils, your health condition, and your preferences. If you have a favorite oil, you can request it. Please be sure to let your practitioner know if you are pregnant or have any medical condition, so that the appropriate oils can be selected. Your treatment may be augmented with aromatherapy in the following ways:

  • Diluted essential oils placed on acupuncture points.

  • Essential oils or oil blends placed on a cotton ball or pad for you to breathe during your session.

  • Aromatherapy sinus treatment (oils gently applied to pressure points above and below the eyes).

Aromatic plants bestow no spicy fragrance while they grow; but crush'd or trodden to the ground, diffuse their balmy sweets around.  Oliver Goldsmith
